Privacy Policy

Effective date: January 1, 2026

Introduction

RuleTheYear ("we," "our," or "us") operates the RuleTheYear web application at ruletheyear.com. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data. By using RuleTheYear, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information:

  • Account information — your email address and encrypted password when you create an account.
  • Calendar data — events, categories, goals, notes, and settings that you create within the application.
  • Technical information — your IP address, browser type, operating system, and device type, collected automatically when you visit the site.
  • Location data — an approximate geographic location (city, region, country) derived from your IP address. We do not collect precise GPS coordinates.
  • Usage data — pages visited, features used, and actions taken within the application.

IP-Based Location Tracking

When you visit RuleTheYear, we use third-party IP geolocation services to determine your approximate location (city, region, and country). This helps us understand where our users are located in aggregate and improve the service. The services we use include:

  • ipapi.co — operated by Kloudend, Inc. Your IP address is transmitted to their servers to resolve a geographic location. Their privacy policy is available at ipapi.co/privacy.
  • ip-api.com — used as a fallback service for location resolution. Their terms are available at ip-api.com/docs.

Location data is stored at the city or region level alongside your login record. We do not store your raw IP address beyond what is necessary to complete the lookup. Location data is associated with your account for the purposes of analytics and security.

Visitor Tracking and Persistent Identifiers

To understand aggregate usage patterns, we assign a unique visitor identifier to your browser using localStorage. This identifier:

  • Is generated randomly and does not contain personal information.
  • Persists across sessions in the same browser on the same device.
  • Is used solely to count unique visitors and understand returning-visitor patterns.
  • Is linked to your account if and when you sign in, so your pre-login and post-login visits can be associated.

You can clear this identifier at any time by clearing your browser's local storage or site data for ruletheyear.com.

How We Use Your Information

  • To provide, maintain, and improve the RuleTheYear service.
  • To authenticate you and secure your account.
  • To understand how users interact with the application so we can make informed product decisions.
  • To detect and prevent abuse, fraud, or unauthorized access.
  • To send transactional emails such as password resets (no marketing emails without your explicit consent).

Third-Party Services

We rely on the following third-party services to operate RuleTheYear:

  • Supabase — our backend platform for database storage, authentication, and server-side functions. Data is stored in Supabase's infrastructure. Their privacy policy is available at supabase.com/privacy.
  • ipapi.co and ip-api.com — IP geolocation (described above).

We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.

Data Retention

We retain your account and calendar data for as long as your account is active. Login history and analytics data are retained for up to 24 months on a rolling basis.

If you delete your account, your personal data and calendar content are permanently deleted within 30 days. Anonymized aggregate analytics data may be retained indefinitely.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:

  • Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction — request that inaccurate data be corrected.
  • Deletion — request that your account and associated data be deleted.
  • Portability — request your calendar data in a machine-readable format.
  • Opt-out of sale — we do not sell personal data, so no opt-out is required.

These rights apply to users under GDPR (European Economic Area and UK), CCPA (California residents), and similar privacy laws. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the address below.

Children's Privacy

RuleTheYear is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Governing Law

This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of the State of New York, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of RuleTheYear after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
